First UK PR Professionals Certified in Carbon Literacy Through PRCA Provision
The Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) has awarded the first two certifications from its new Carbon Literacy and Communications Course, accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project.
A PRCA apprentice and a Managing Director of a PR agency are the first participants to complete the one-day course. They join over 143,000 people certified as Carbon Literate and have added their pledges for change to the 287,934 actions underway to address climate change.
The course is designed for PR and communications professionals working in-house or in agencies. It covers the fundamentals of climate change, how individuals and organisations can act, and how to communicate sustainability accurately. Topics include greenwashing, green hushing, and current regulatory requirements. The aim is to help practitioners give informed, responsible advice when communicating environmental issues.
The training is delivered by Carol Magill, a certified Carbon Literate Facilitator and Lead Assessor for PRCA’s Communications Management Standard (CMS).
Carol Magill said:
“The course uses tools and materials approved by the Carbon Literacy Project to help participants understand climate issues and how to make practical changes.
PR professionals play a key role in ensuring sustainability is communicated clearly and accurately. The course looks at live examples of greenwashing and the risks that come with it. It also discusses how green hushing can limit progress and how communicators can encourage clients to share their sustainability efforts confidently.
Senior leaders who complete the course can also take steps towards Carbon Literate accreditation for their organisations in partnership with the Carbon Literacy Project.”
Kate Turner, Managing Director at Faust PR, said:
“This was such a useful session that really got me thinking about our impact as a business. Being an SME, it’s quite easy to think we can’t have much impact, but I am going to go away and make some real changes in our day-to-day operations – and in my personal life too.”
The course is delivered online and will next run in January and June 2026.
