World Earth Day: PRCA Climate Communications Group and Speakers for Schools host climate literacy event for students

Secondary school students will have the chance this week to mark World Earth Day by boosting their climate literacy, one of the focus themes of this year’s Earth Day. A virtual panel, convened by the PRCA Climate Communications Group in partnership with Speakers for Schools, brings together four renowned experts and will be held on Thursday, 20 April 2023, from 10:00-10:45 BST. The discussion will focus on the current scientific understanding of climate change and arming students to better scrutinise reports about climate change in the future.

The event will provide insights on the latest climate science, navigating the complexity of climate information, and spotting good and bad sources of data about climate change to stop the spread of misinformation. Students will be challenged to consider their own impact and how they can contribute to combating the climate emergency.

Speakers for the event include Chris Stark, CEO of the UK Committee on Climate Change; Leo Hickman, Journalist and Editor of Climate Brief; Richard Black, former journalist and Director of the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit; and Dr. Catherine Happer, Director of the Glasgow University Media Group.

Chris Pratt, member of the PRCA Climate Communications Group and one of the organisers said:

"We hope that young people will feel empowered to better scrutinise climate change information. As communicators, it is our responsibility to ensure that we provide them with accurate and reliable information. Climate literacy will become an increasingly important professional and life skill and hopefully sessions like this and the many other Earth Day initiatives give students the tools that they need.”

The virtual event is free to attend, and schools can register here.
